GERMANTOWN, Ohio — Valley View opened Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division play with a 42-0 victory over Carlisle on Friday night at Niswonger Field.
The matchup sent both teams into conference play with 2-2 overall records through the first four weeks of the season, while Valley View moved to 1-0 in the Buckeye Division and Carlisle fell to 0-1.
Valley View entered Friday looking to rebound from a 22-0 loss to Bellbrook in Week 3, while Carlisle came to Germantown following a 20-12 victory over Bethel.
The Spartans were able to establish control on both sides of the ball, producing a season-high 42 points while their defense kept Carlisle off the scoreboard.
It marked the second shutout victory of the season for Valley View. The Spartans also defeated Franklin 37-0 in Week 2 and have outscored their opponents 79-0 in their two victories.
Quarterback Brody Gibbs has led the Valley View passing attack during the opening weeks of the season. Against Bellbrook in Week 3, Gibbs threw for 88 yards, with senior Owen Neal accounting for a team-high 40 receiving yards.
Carlisle entered Friday having shown its ability to put points on the board earlier in the season. The Indians opened the year with a 43-12 victory over Milton-Union and scored 20 more in their Week 3 win over Bethel.
Valley View’s defense, however, prevented Carlisle from establishing that same offensive rhythm Friday night.
The shutout continued a strong defensive trend for the Spartans in their victories. Through four games, Valley View has allowed 59 total points, with 37 coming in its season-opening loss at Coldwater and 22 against Bellbrook.
Offensively, Friday represented a significant turnaround for Valley View after being held scoreless the previous week.
The Spartans scored six touchdowns to reach 42 points, surpassing their previous season high of 37 against Franklin. Valley View has now scored 100 points through the first four games of the season.
For Carlisle, the loss ended an opportunity to build on its victory over Bethel and evened the Indians’ record at 2-2.
The Indians have experienced a mix of results through their opening four games. Carlisle defeated Milton-Union 43-12 in the opener before falling 20-7 to Miami East. The Indians then responded by beating Bethel 20-12 before Friday’s trip to Germantown.
With nonconference play largely in the rearview mirror, both teams now turn their attention toward the SWBL Buckeye Division schedule.
Valley View improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play and will remain at home next Friday to face Eaton.
Carlisle also sits at 2-2 overall and will look for its first conference victory when the Indians return home to face Franklin.
