The Slate: Six Games to Know in Week 9

From a Cincinnati conference showdown to pivotal late-season matchups across Southwest Ohio, Week 9 brings another compelling slate of high school football.

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the stakes continue to rise across Ohio.

Conference championships, playoff positioning, and the opportunity to build momentum heading into the postseason are all part of the conversation. For some teams, Week 9 represents a chance to strengthen an already impressive season. For others, it offers an opportunity to make a statement before the regular season comes to a close.

This week’s edition of The Slate takes a look at six matchups worth following, from Greater Cincinnati to the Miami Valley and the Midwest Athletic Conference.

St. Edward at Moeller

Saturday, October 17 | 3:00 PM

Two of Ohio’s most recognizable football programs meet in a matchup that brings plenty of tradition, expectations, and postseason significance.

Moeller enters Week 9 with a 6-2 record and plenty of momentum. After opening the season 1-2, the Crusaders have responded with five consecutive victories, putting themselves in a strong position heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

St. Edward arrives with an impressive 7-1 record, with its only setback coming in Week 5 — a narrow two-point loss to Massillon Washington. The Eagles have otherwise navigated a demanding schedule with consistent success.

Both programs have built their reputations competing against some of the strongest teams in Ohio and beyond. With the postseason approaching, this matchup offers another opportunity to measure themselves against high-level competition.

For Moeller, the challenge is extending its winning streak to six games. For St. Edward, it’s an opportunity to add another significant victory to an already impressive résumé.

With two of the state’s premier programs facing off, this is one of Week 9’s must-watch matchups.

Winton Woods at Anderson

Friday, October 16 | 7:00 PM

Something has to give when two of Southwest Ohio’s most explosive offenses meet in a pivotal Eastern Cincinnati Conference showdown.

Winton Woods enters Week 9 riding a seven-game winning streak, with its only setback coming in a Week 1 overtime loss at Springfield. The Warriors elected to go for the victory with a two-point conversion attempt, but came up short.

Since then, Winton Woods has been nearly unstoppable. The Warriors are averaging 40.5 points per game while allowing just 7 points per contest, establishing themselves as one of the area’s most complete teams.

Anderson has been equally impressive offensively.

After opening the season with a loss to Louisville Trinity, the Raptors have rattled off seven consecutive victories. During that stretch, Anderson has scored at least 49 points in every game.

The Raptors enter Friday averaging a remarkable 54.625 points per game. Defensively, Anderson allows 24 points per contest on the season, although that number improves to 19 points per game during its seven-game winning streak.

The matchup presents a fascinating contrast. Winton Woods brings one of the area’s stingiest defenses into a game against an Anderson offense that has consistently overwhelmed opponents.

Can the Warriors slow down the Raptors’ high-powered attack? Or will Anderson find a way to continue its remarkable offensive production against its toughest defensive challenge yet?

With both teams carrying seven-game winning streaks, this has all the makings of one of Week 9’s premier matchups.

Bellbrook at Oakwood

Friday, October 16 | 7:00 PM

Two productive offenses will meet two impressive defenses when Bellbrook travels to Oakwood for a Southwestern Buckeye League showdown.

Bellbrook has established itself as one of the area’s most difficult teams to score against. Through eight games, the Golden Eagles are surrendering just 6.75 points per contest while averaging 32.75 points offensively.

Oakwood, meanwhile, has put together an impressive offensive season of its own.

The Lumberjacks are averaging 38.5 points per game while allowing only 13.75 points per contest, creating an intriguing matchup between two teams that have been successful on both sides of the football.

The numbers suggest that points could be difficult to come by, despite the offensive production both teams have enjoyed throughout the season.

Bellbrook will look to continue its defensive dominance against an Oakwood offense accustomed to finding the end zone. The Lumberjacks, meanwhile, will attempt to challenge a Golden Eagles defense that has rarely allowed opponents to establish any offensive rhythm.

Something will have to give Friday night.

Will Bellbrook’s defense continue to dictate the game, or can Oakwood’s offense find success against one of the toughest units it has faced this season?

Tippecanoe at Troy

Friday, October 16 | 7:00 PM

Two seven-game winning streaks. Two outstanding defenses. And at least a share of the Miami Valley League championship on the line.

Tippecanoe and Troy meet Friday night in one of the most consequential MVL matchups of the season.

The Red Devils have been dominant since suffering their only loss of the season to Bellbrook in Week 1. Tippecanoe has won seven consecutive games, recording five shutouts during that stretch.

Through eight games, the Red Devils are averaging 44.625 points per contest while allowing just 5.875 points per game.

Troy has put together an impressive run of its own.

The Trojans also enter the matchup riding seven consecutive victories, averaging 34.5 points per game while allowing 13.625 points per contest.

Both programs have demonstrated the ability to control games with strong defensive performances while producing points consistently on offense.

The numbers alone make this matchup compelling, but the championship implications raise the stakes even further.

Friday’s winner will secure at least a share of the Miami Valley League title, making this one of the biggest conference games of Week 9.

With two teams carrying identical winning streaks and championship aspirations, something will have to give at Troy Memorial Stadium.

Coldwater at St. Henry

Friday, October 16 | 7:00 PM

There are no easy weeks in the Midwest Athletic Conference, and Coldwater will be reminded of that when the Cavaliers travel to St. Henry on Friday.

Coldwater enters the matchup looking to rebound from a 20-7 loss to Anna in Week 8.

The Cavaliers have averaged 26.5 points per game this season while allowing 14.375 points per contest, but their latest setback serves as another reminder of just how unforgiving the MAC can be.

St. Henry has faced its own share of challenges against elite competition.

After opening the season 0-2, the Redskins have worked to regain momentum. Their three losses have come against opponents with a combined 24-0 record, illustrating the difficulty of their schedule.

Despite those challenges, St. Henry has averaged 31.625 points per game offensively while allowing 18.125 points per contest.

Both teams have shown the ability to produce offensively, and both understand the demands of competing in one of Ohio’s toughest small-school conferences.

For Coldwater, Friday represents an opportunity to respond after a difficult loss. For St. Henry, it’s another chance to prove itself against a familiar MAC opponent.

With the postseason approaching, neither team can afford to overlook another demanding conference matchup.

Arcanum at Ansonia

Friday, October 16 | 7:00 PM

One of the Western Ohio Athletic Conference’s most important late-season matchups takes place Friday when Arcanum travels to Ansonia.

The Trojans enter the contest unbeaten in WOAC play at 6-0, while the Tigers are close behind at 6-1 in conference action.

Arcanum has been one of the conference’s most productive offensive teams, averaging 41.875 points per game while allowing 14.75 points per contest.

The Trojans have also experienced their share of heartbreak outside conference play. Against Northeastern (Indiana), Arcanum surrendered a touchdown on fourth-and-13 with just 25 seconds remaining, falling 54-49 in a dramatic finish.

Ansonia has been equally impressive throughout the season.

The Tigers’ only loss came against undefeated Tri-Village, a narrow 29-22 defeat. Otherwise, Ansonia has consistently found ways to win, averaging 47.75 points per game while allowing 13.125 points per contest.

Both teams have offenses capable of putting points on the scoreboard quickly, and both enter the contest with plenty at stake in the WOAC standings.

For Arcanum, a victory would preserve its unbeaten conference record. For Ansonia, it’s an opportunity to hand the Trojans their first WOAC defeat and strengthen its position in the conference race.

With two of the WOAC’s most explosive offenses sharing the field, this matchup has the potential to be one of the most entertaining games of the week.

The Final Stretch

Week 9 represents more than another Friday night on the schedule.

For teams chasing conference titles, every possession matters. For programs looking toward the playoffs, each game provides another opportunity to improve, build confidence, and prepare for the challenges ahead.

From the intensity of Winton Woods and Anderson to the tradition surrounding St. Edward and Moeller, this week’s matchups offer plenty of reasons to pay attention.
