KETTERING, OH — The Archbishop Alter Knights are SWOHSHL champions.
Alter defeated Beavercreek 3-2 Wednesday night at the Kettering Recreation Complex, completing a championship run with a hard-fought victory over the Beavers and bringing the SWOHSHL Cup home to Kettering.
The championship matchup lived up to the expectations surrounding the two teams. Alter and Beavercreek battled throughout the night, with neither side able to pull away as the Knights ultimately held on for the one-goal victory.
Alter entered the tournament as the top seed after clinching the regular-season championship. The Knights opened the postseason with a 4-1 semifinal victory over Troy on Saturday, while Beavercreek advanced to the championship game with a 4-2 semifinal win over Springboro.
That set up a rematch between two of the league’s top teams.
The Knights had already defeated Beavercreek 2-1 in their most recent regular-season meeting on Feb. 2, and Wednesday’s championship game provided another close contest between the two programs.
This time, Alter came away with a 3-2 victory and both the regular-season and tournament championships.
The win capped a strong SWOHSHL campaign for the Knights and gave the program its first league championship. Beavercreek finished as the tournament runner-up after putting together a strong postseason run of its own.
With the final horn sounding, Alter celebrated its championship on home ice, while Beavercreek was left just one goal short.
The Knights are officially on top of the Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League.
